Indiana Traditional Arts Center is Morgan County's premier art center. The 1921 Arts & Crafts buildings, tastefully restored, are an attractive venue for the arts. Our goal is to teach the traditional arts so they do not die out and to also enrich peoples lives by showing them how to develop skills in those crafts.
Indiana Traditional Arts Center was founded, and is directed by, Kathleen M. Gould Stevens. Mrs. Stevens, a retired school principal, has been designing and weaving textiles for individuals and for the interior design trade for 43 years. She is a Traditional Arts weaving artist and teacher. Kathleen was introduced to weaving by long time NJ teacher, Doris Boyd, local to her neighborhood. From that basic introduction, Kathleen spent many years learning weaving; self-taught using her large library. Her work is sold under the business KATHLEEN STEVENS HAND-WOVEN DESIGNS, est. 1976 and is available through the ITAC Gallery, her studio, and in Hoosier Artist Gallery, Nashville, Indiana.
.
Our gallery offers Indiana artisans a place to showcase and sell their art. Free lectures are presented to the public as a resource for general education. ITAC offers many classes for children and adults.
Home schoolers and family groups find the classes most beneficial.
Classes offered include but are not limited to: Weaving; knitting; stenciling; rug braiding; rug hooking; needle punch embroidery; spinning; crochet; childrens bread baking; spinning etc. etc. We also offer a "Weaving Outreach" program designed for challenged children and adults.
HAND WEAVING ON FLOOR LOOMS: Itac offers beginning, intermediate, and advanced weaving classes on vintage and modern floor looms by Kathleen Stevens and guest weaving teachers.
